Ilene Lieberman In Her Own Words…

Try and keep your lunch down. Here is the “About Ilene” section from Ilene Lieberman’s campaign website. At least she touts her, “keen understanding of the court system.” Sadly, no mention of the War On Mango Theft.

“Broward County Commissioner Ilene Lieberman has had an influential and well-respected political presence in Broward County for the past 28 years. She has served as a Commissioner at both the city and county level as well as eight and one-half years as the strong Mayor of the City of Lauderhill, an elected administrative position. Ilene’s accomplishments in the local, state and federal arenas as well as her commitment to community service have been well recognized.

Ilene received a B.A. from the State University New York, College at Cortland, and an M.A. from New York University, M.A., 1974. After teaching in the Public Schools for 5 years, Ilene attained her life-long ambition when she graduated Summa Cum Laude from Nova Southeastern University Shepard Broad Law Center in 1989 and was class Valedictorian. Ilene has since been an adjunct Professor in Local Government law at the Nova Law Center.

Ilene is the immediate past Chair of the National Association of Counties’ (NACo) Large Urban Caucus Steering Committee & the Chair of NACo’s Housing subcommittee. In that capacity, she has helped write and pass federal laws about healthcare and government finance. She was elected by her peers to be President of the Florida Association of Counties and is also a past President of the Florida League of Cities. She is the first local elected official to have been elected to both positions. In this capacity, she worked to enact or revise state laws for both groups. As a City and then County Commissioner, Ilene has had to hear thousands of cases which involved interpreting and applying the law to the facts.

In addition, Ilene has a keen understanding for the court system. She was chair of the Broward County Courthouse Committee, which reduced the cost of the new courthouse by close to one-third. She currently serves on the Federal Courthouse Task force. She has been practicing law since 1990 in the areas of Probate, Guardianship, Commercial Transactions and Appellate Advocacy.

Ilene has been a very active member of our community. She is a Director of the Transplant Foundation of South Florida. She also serves on the Board of Directors of the Boys and Girls Club. Ilene was one of the three founding members of the Swim Central program, which provides swimming instruction to kindergarteners to reduce the number of drownings in our County. She was Chair of Florida’s Complete Count Committee for the 2000 Census and served as chair of Broward County’s Census 2010 Complete Count Committee and maintains memberships with numerous service clubs and community organizations that benefit from her involvement. She is the Board of County Commissioner’s appointment to the Resource Recovery Board (which she chairs), the South Florida Regional Planning Council and the Broward County Value Adjustment Board.

Ilene is married to Stuart R. Michelson and has 3 children, Adam, 41, Jeff, 37, & Stacy, 30. She also has been blessed with 3 grandchildren.”
