Space Race: Haridopolos Says Obama/Nelson Failed To Save Florida Jobs

FL Senate President Mike Haridopolos says President Obama and US Senator Bill Nelson (D-Toast) failed to deliver on their promise to save thousands of hi-tech jobs in Florida. With the shuttering of NASA space shuttle program, thousands of jobs on Florida’s Space Coast will disappear.

Obama and Nelson promised aggressive steps to save jobs on Florida. Instead, Nelson, a former champion of NASA, sits on his hands while the Obama administration doles out NASA contracts to friends in important electoral states.

In an Orlando Sentinel op-Ed piece, Haridopolos recounts concrete steps taken by Florida to save the industry:

“Despite limited resources, the Florida Legislature in 2010 increased space-program funding by more than 600 percent. That level of funding sends a strong message that Florida is serious about not only retaining its status as the gateway to space in America, but building its world markets as well.”

Haridoplos is a candidate for Nelson’s US Senate seat.

Could the inattention of Team Obama and Bill Nelson be more proof they do not expect to do well in Florida in 2012? Someone should remind them of President John F. Kennedy’s challenge that resulted in Americans walking on the moon in July 1969. After all, President Kennedy was a Democrat.

  1. Hari is Da man

Haridop is doing well…while LeMieux cracks facebook jokes and Hasner talks about Sharia law, Haridopolos is actually talking about jobs…and has the backbone to get policy through the legislature.

No. The Florida Legislature is to blame for losing those jobs. Republican controlled since the early 1990’s.

You see Republicans have cut and eliminated taxes, cut fees, on and on. Cut and eliminated programs. So under the theory followed in Tallahassee and in DC until 2009, we should be rolling in jobs.

To the contrary, the theory failed and we lost jobs. We are in the Great Recession now that they caused. So “Hair”idopolos had no one to blame but himself and many of his cohorts.

Its always easy to blame someone else and never take responsibility. They would have taken the credit if it had worked out, but since it didn’t, they can’t.

I doubt Florida wanted to mothball the shuttle program. I can remember Gov Bob Martinez talking about aerospace jobs and space ports. Politics sent lots of jobs to Texas and California. Now, Obama guts what is left of NASA and even punishes the folks in Houston. So much for forward thinking progressives. They need $ for pet programs so they’ll leave space for the Chinese and Russians.
