Broward Democrat Party Chairman Issues Statement On State Rep. Hillary Cassel Joining Republican Party

Hillary Cassel

Statement Regarding State Rep. Hillary Cassel’s Decision to Switch Parties
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Broward Democratic Party is deeply disappointed by Representative Hillary Cassel’s decision to switch from being a Democrat to Republican. Representative Cassel misled supporters from within the party, but the bigger disservice is to the voters in District 101 about what she stood for as an elected official for her own political gain.

It is very unsettling that Representative Cassel has now chosen to align herself with a state party that has consistently prioritized voter suppression and policies that disregard the economic and health needs of everyday Floridians. They also side with insurance companies over people and billion dollar corporations as opposed to small businesses and homeowners.

The Broward Democratic Party looks forward to working closely with the Florida Democratic Party to elect a Democratic representative who truly embodies the values of the Democratic Party, and the priorities of District 101.

Broward Dems Elect Alfredo Olvera As New State Committeeman

Members of the Broward Democratic Executive Committee elected Alfredo Olvera as their new State Committeeman. Olvera, a Fort Lauderdale real estate agent, replaces longtime committeeman Ken Evans who abruptly resigned last month. Olvera, president of the Dolphin Democrats, defeated Ted Victor 109-86.

According to sources, Victor was the favored candidate of Party chairman Rick Hoye. Victor, a teacher, has deep ties to the Broward Teachers Union. Victor’s loss is another setback for Hoye. Party executive director Ryann Greenberg, a Hoye ally, recently resigned from her post.
