Buddy Nevins just reported on Browardbeat.com that Maureen Dinnen (D-What Corruption?) won’t seek another term on the Broward County School Board. Dinnen is the chief apologist for the old way of doing things at the School Board.
School Board member Katie Leach already filed to challenge Dinnen.
Was Dinnen feeling the heat? Are Democrats (Hello Judy Stern) resorting to plan B? Curious that Dinnen practically begged for others to jump into the District 3 race; Dinnen said she, “wanted to make this announcement publicly, so people could hear from me directly, and I want to announce now, so if anyone else wants to declare for District 3 they can, and I would encourage people to do so.”
Here is Mo’s full statement:
“Thank you Madam Chair for allowing me a moment of personal privilege today.
I have had three careers so far: teaching, union work, and School Board work. I started at age 21, some 50 years ago.
A year and a half ago I celebrated an important birthday, age 70. It was one of those ah-ha moments in life where you take time and assess where you are and where you are going. Looking to the immediate future, I asked myself, ‘What do I want to do between age 72 and 76?’ ‘Can I remain on the School Board and ever expect to teach a college history class again?’ ‘Could I, at last, be that education activist who represents her own thoughts in writing and action, or will I always have to be careful that I not be seen as giving a group’s opinion?’
I have taken the past year to mull over the future, and I have decided that I want to move on, to do something else, to get started on career number four. To that end, I will not seek re-election to the Broward School Board for District 3 or any other School Board seat this November.
I have never held a union or other office more than two terms. I guess I always start looking around for new things to do once I’ve been in a job about 7-8 years.
At this juncture in my life I want to re-enter the academic world, to teach a college or university class or two, to write and to advocate directly for public education.
I know that those who are ever-ready to portray public schools and school boards negatively will say I am running from a tough re-election fight. Those folks do not understand how an Irish person like me loves to fight!
I will always feel so fortunate to have worked with so many people who labor tirelessly for our students. Who, every day, demonstrate that it is all about the kids. They are teachers, non-instructional staff members, administrators, board members, parents…All are my colleagues. Also, I am so grateful to the many citizens who have supported my work. How lucky I am, to be able to work for our students, the very future of our county.
I wanted to make this announcement publicly, so people could hear from me directly, and I want to announce now, so if anyone else wants to declare for District 3 they can, and I would encourage people to do so.
So I guess that’s it, folks. I will be here until November, and make no mistake about it…To the very last day of my term I will continue to represent my district with every ounce of energy.
