BTU SCANDAL: Pat Santeramo Was “Event Chair” For May 2009 Alex Sink Fundraiser

Did Pat Santeramo, disgraced former Prez of BTU, take his role as an “Event Chair” for Alex Sink a bit too seriously? The ongoing investigation should answer the question. For now, here’s an entry from the May 2009 Sun-Sentinel announcing the Alex Sink fundraiser:

“Broward’s political-legal-business-lobbying elite — at least as far as the Democrats are concerned — are joining forces to help the state’s top Democrat raise campaign money.

They’re hosting a Riverside Hotel fundraiser on Thursday for Alex Sink, the state’s chief financial officer. She’s the leading candidate for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination, though she hasn’t yet declared for that spot.

The invitation, including the listing of event chairs and hosts — and the amount of dough the different categories are raising — is on the continuation of this blog posting.

BTU SCANDAL: Former Broward Housing Official Paid By BTU Wanted To Be A Broward School Board Member?

Bob Norman of WPLG/Local 10 reported David S. Esposito, former Broward Housing official and owner of Marstan Construction, was paid hefty fees by disgraced Broward Teachers Union prez Pat Santeramo. Norman reports that Esposito referred all questions to his lawyer, Michael Moskowitz. Moskowitz, a major player in Broward Democrat politics is also the attorney for Pat Santeramo.

Back in 1992, Mr. Esposito sought election to the Broward County School Board (District 3). The following appeared in the Sun-Sentinel:

— Political experience: Broward County Democratic Executive Committee, precinct and area leader.

— Involvement: Coral Springs Democratic Club president; Broward Economic Development Board; Committee of 100; Broward County Council of Chambers; Sawgrass Chamber of Commerce of Coral Springs, founding member.

PRIORITIES

— Scrutinize capital improvement budget for ways to put money into education by saving on construction needs.

— Increase business and community involvement in local schools. Expand Partners in Excellence program.

— Address needs of all students, not just those who are college-bound.”

But wait, there’s more! The Sun-Sentinel reported Esposito and two others (including Lois Wexler) did not even live in District 3. Esposito admitted he rented an apartment in Fort Lauderdale to qualify and his real residence was in Coral Springs.

“The problem: Their actual homes are outside District 3. And that has raised questions over whether Wexler should face Republican Kathleen Hooks on Nov. 3 for the $24,400-a-year job.

Esposito, who lost in the September primary, now says he wants the race thrown out. And Cohen, who was defeated by Wexler in the Oct. 1 runoff, said she wants her $1,836 qualifying fee returned.

`I knew I didn`t live in the district when I qualified,` Cohen said on Friday. `But at least I didn`t lie about where I lived.`

Esposito also knew his Coral Springs home was outside the district. He rented the Fort Lauderdale apartment to comply with state law, which requires School Board candidates to live in the district when they qualify. This differs from other state races that allow candidates who live outside the district to move into the district when elected.

‘ knew that we both had to relocate in order to qualify, but at least I did it the right way,’ said Esposito, who plans to contest the election.

Wexler on Friday denied that she lives outside the district even though property and federal income tax records, and voting records show that she officially lives at 16900 SW Fifth St. in the Bonaventure Lakes subdivision of southwest Broward County.“
