Is Mayor of Tamarac just a stepping stone to a higher office for Elberg Mike Gelin? In an hour long interview on Facebook Wednesday night, Gelin declared he really wants a seat on the Broward County Commission. Gelin is currently a member of the Tamarac City Commission.

The host of the Facebook Live interview asked Gelin if running for mayor was part of his future plans. Gelin said he was currently running for mayor. Then, Gelin’s face lit up when he said really wanted to be a Broward County Commission.

Gelin made no mention of his plans for Tamarac if he became Mayor. He did not have any kind words for his city. Instead, he explained how a Broward County Commissioner had jurisdiction over multiple cities.

Gelin tried to qualify his comments but stating a run for County Commission could be eight or ten years down the road.

Yet, Gelin’s track record shows he is not a patient politician. Many political insiders were shocked when Gelin decided to challenge the popular incumbent Mayor Michelle Gomez.

Gelin currently resides in Broward County Commission District 3. The highly popular Broward County Mayor, Michael Udine, represents District 3. Mayor Udine is up for re-election in 2024.

Cities in District 3 include parts of Coral Springs, North Lauderdale, Parkland, Sunrise and Tamarac. Gelin has supported left-wing allies in these cities for years.

Most politicians never express a desire to move to a higher office, especially while in the midst of a campaign for a different office.

Is Elberg Mike Gelin running a quixotic campaign for Mayor of Tamarac simply to boost his name recognition?

Would Gelin promise not to quit on Tamarac residents in two years and run for higher office?
