"And a very small man can cast a very large shadow."
Yesterday’s surprise announcement by Congressman Allen West set off an earthquake in Broward county. West is moving to Congressman Tom Rooney’s more Republican-friendly district in northern Palm Beach and Martin county.
Adam Hasner quickly withdrew from the U.S. Senate race to pursue West’s old Congressional seat. GOP sources told RED BROWARD Allen West would endorse Hasner’s bid for CD-22. So everything is settled, right?
Nope. Even before West’s announcement, published reports claimed local Democrats were trying to pressure Lois Frankel (D-No Chance) to drop out of the race; Democrats believed Patrick Murphy (D-Erin) had a better chance at beating West. But now what?
Murphy is a political lightweight in Broward Democrat circles. The Broward DEM heavyweights were afraid to challenge West (even in a more Democrat friendly district). These “brave” politicians do not have the same fear of Adam Hasner.
Today, published reports claim Broward County Commissioners John Rodstrom and Kristin Jacobs (D-“Fair”) are eyeballing the race. Other rumors claim Republican Chip LaMarca is mulling his options as well. We’ve also heard about some CD-20 candidates rethinking their bids against Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-Out of Touch).
RED BROWARD was tipped off about an incident at a polling place in Broward during Tuesday’s Presidential Preference Primary. According to this Republican voter, Brenda Snipes’ crew at this location were not happy about standing around all day as Republicans voted. It is unclear whether these employees were paid volunteers or permanent employees of the Broward Supervisor of Elections office. Either way, they’re using our tax dollars.
where oh where is Brenda Snipes?
Here is the first-hand account of the incident:
“I had a very unusual thing happen to me when I reported to my assigned location to vote in today’s Republican Primary Election in Florida.
Only registered Republicans could vote in my city today, as the only contest on the ballot was the choice for who Republicans want to be their party’s nominee for president.
I arrived at XXXXXXX in the city of XXXXXXXX, Florida, around 4:30pm, and I was greeted and asked for my identification. I handed it over to the election worker, and while she located my name on her list, I overheard a discussion between four other election workers, which was taking place no more than 15 feet from where I was. An older black woman said ‘I can’t believe I have to be here until 7 o’clock for these Rednecks.’ Another older woman who was not black, but had a dark complexion, responded with a remark of her own, which expressed similar sentiments, and also included the word ‘rednecks.’
I looked on in disbelief, and was then asked to sign in. When I leaned over to sign my name, I heard the word ‘redneck’ stated no fewer than two more times.
I was then told to go over to where the group of four election workers were standing. As I approached, I was handed my ballot, and their group split up. I proceded (sic) to tell the two who remained from the original group of four that ‘I’m not sure why you think all Republicans are rednecks, but I’m originally from up North, and I am a Republican for a number of reasons, including the Abortion issue, and I would never vote for a pro-abortion candidate, and nearly every Democrat politician is pro-abortion.’ They appeared shocked by what I said, and then I continued by saying ‘There are some of us who take our religion seriously when it comes to taking a stand on the issues, and that’s one of the reasons why I am here to vote Republican.’
An older white woman defused the situation by stating ‘Okie-dokie sir, we’ll make note of that, now if you could please come over here and complete your ballot.’ She was helpful and courteous, and nothing else was said.
Now just imagine if the tables were reversed, and some publicly-paid poll workers made derogatory remarks about Democrats. I’m pretty confident it would make the national news, and would undoubtedly be used as evidence to support all sorts of myths and and scare tactics.”
Brenda Snipes, a Broward Democrat, is up for re-election in November 2012. She needs an opponent.
