In a lengthy telephone interview with The Daily Broward, Reverend O’Neal Dozier, the conservative leader of the Worldwide Christian Center Church of Pompano Beach, explained why he is supporting a Democrat in the Broward County Commission Race. Dozier, a longtime member of the Broward Republican Executive Committee, has supported many Republican and tea party candidates including Governor Jeb Bush, President George W. Bush and Senator Rick Santorum. On Monday, the Carmen Jones campaign issued a press release listing the endorsement of Dozier.
Jones, a Pompano Beach community organizer, is Commissioner Dale Holness’ hand picked choice to join him on the dais. Holness said, “Carmen would be an excellent County Commissioner, as a product of north Broward with more than 20 years of fighting for community issues,” said County Commissioner Dale Holness, who has already endorsed Jones. “She has deep roots in Pompano Beach and Deerfield with her family roots dating back to the 1930s and she will be a great asset working for the people of Broward County.”
Published reports say the controversial Holness has failed to pay taxes on numerous properties throughout Broward county. Other reports call into question whether Holness actually lives in his commission district.
Over at Broward Beat, Buddy Nevins wrote the Jones candidacy is “more proof that County Commissioner Dale Holness wants to be King of Broward County government.” A Democrat insider told Nevins that Holness “wants to be the Go-To Guy in Broward. He wants the developers coming to him.”
Under Broward Republican Executive Committee rules, members are not allowed to support Democrat candidates in partisan races. As of this moment, there are no Republican candidates for the District 2 race. Dozier said Jones had attended his church. He said he supported her candidacy but he was not aware his support would be used in a press release.
Dozier said he supports Jones because her “principles in Christianity [are] solid.” He stated he wants Conservative Republicans to run and be elected but if none did, he would support a “Democrat running on the side of God.”
Dozier said, ” Are all Democrats heathens and on the side of Satan? No.”
Dozier said Broward Republican Executive Committee Secretary Carolyn Kennedy mentioned she spoke with Jones about a bid for the Pompano Beach city commission.
Dozier said Jones told him she was approached by Holness and Commissioner Chip LaMarca about running for the county commission seat.
