CBS4 MIAMI confirms Sylvia Poitier, Deerfield City Commissioner and Broward Democrat, has been charged.

“Deerfield Beach City Commissioner Sylvia Poitier has turned herself in to authorities to face five misdemeanor criminal counts of falsifying records.

The charges stem from information submitted on conflict of interest forms the 75-year old life long Deerfield Beach resident filed with the city in 2009 concerning her vote for a $30 thousand grant to the Westside Deerfield Businessman Association, according to the Sun-Sentinel.

According to investigators, the association owed Poitier’s brother, Lionel Ferguson, $47 thousand which he had loaned to the group. The grant was not awarded, but Poitier’s vote was a potential conflict of interest.  If the grant had been awarded, it would have improved the chances of Ferguson being repaid.”
