The campaign of Broward County Commission District 2 candidate Tyron Francois may be short-lived as it appears he is violating Florida election laws. Florida Statute 99.0615 states, “At the time of qualification, all write-in candidates must reside within the district represented by the office sought.” In campaign paperwork filed last Friday, the 25 year-old Democrat listed his address as 4019 NW 37th Terrace in Lauderdale Lakes. This address is not within the boundaries of District 2.
Francois’ entry into the District 2 race as a write-in candidate prevents Republicans and Independents from voting in the August 26, 2014 primary. If Francois is removed, all Broward voters would choose a commissioner from the current crop of Democrat candidates: Lisa Aronson, Mark Bogen, Carmen Jones, Terry Williams-Edden and Charlotte Rodstrom.
According to the Broward Supervisor of Elections(SOE) website, Francois lives in County Commission District 9, a seat currently held by Dale Holness. Francois is registered to vote at this Lauderdale Lakes address. Even though the Florida elections statute is crystal clear, the Supervisor of Elections website states Francois qualified for the District 2 race.
