ESPN: “Poor Turnout” At Broward Cricket Matches Could Doom Future Of Sport In Florida

A series of tweets from an ESPN reporter highlighted the "poor turnout" at two CPL cricket matches this weekend in Lauderhill. ESPN cricket reporter Peter Della Penna was in Broward to cover a doubleheader between the Barbados Tridents and the Jamaica Tallawahs. On Monday, REDBROWARD reported Krishna Persaud, a supporter of Broward County Commissioner Dale Holness, purchased the Tallawahs in July. Earlier this year, Holness pushed a no-bid deal which gave Persaud control of the cricket stadium in the Central Broward Regional Park.

Della Penna reported Persaud planned to move the Tallawahs from Jamaica to Lauderhill.

On Sunday, Della Penna discussed the crowd at the Lauderhill park over the weekend. He tweeted, "Less than 1000 people in the ground….Could be the final CPL match in Florida with such poor turnout." One of Della Pena's Twitter followers called attendance "heartbreaking."

Della Penna continued, "Not sure what it looked like for TV cameras, but it was kind of depressing that such a really exciting doubleheader was so poorly attended." Another Twitter follower wrote, "It showed on camera how bad that crowd was. It really lacked atmosphere for 2 very good matches."

Earlier, Della Penna stated that attendance was reported to be 5,200 for both matches.

REDBROWARD obtained screenshots of a live stream of the matches. While actual attendance figures were unavailable, the idea that 5,200 people attended the matches is very generous. The nearly four hour broadcast showed lots and lots of empty blue seats.

Remember when Holness and Persaud promised big crowds at the Lauderhill stadium? And that was before Persaud bought a team. If Krishna Persaud is so great at promoting cricket, why couldn't he get more than 1000 people to attend games for a team he owns?

How is this mess a great deal for Broward County taxpayers?!?
