State: Viral Video About Broward Schools Banned Books Is “Completely Untrue”

Alison Ronis went viral

A spokesman for the Florida Department of Education says a video purporting to show books pulled from Broward schools is “completely untrue.” The Tik Tok video shows Broward school employees and security staff with boxes of books. The employee claims the books were pulled from shelves by order of the State of Florida. The employee claims the State deemed the books “inappropriate.”

Allison Ronis, a Micro-Computer Tech Specialist, posted the video on her Tik Tok. She also posted a video of her school library where the “purged books” were once kept.

On Monday, FLDOE communications director Alex Lafranconi wrote, “I cannot emphasize enough how completely untrue this is. Anyone sharing this video is lying to you. Broward County has already confirmed this is simply end of the year library inventory. The state is not involved in any way.”

John Sullivan, Broward Schools Chief Communications and Legislative Affairs Officer, wrote, “This video is not accurate and is simply a false representation. The State (@EducationFL) has not banned any books @browardschools. The school shown in the video was updating/refreshing its book inventory.”

In a follow up video, Ronis said she was “kindly asked” to remove the viral video. She said she made the video private.

Ronis said she was informed the books were removed because they were fifteen years old.
