Governor Ron DeSantis Appoints Ryan Petty to the State Board of Education

Today, Governor Ron DeSantis announced the appointment of Ryan Petty to the State Board of Education.

Petty, of Parkland, is the senior vice president of business-to-business products for Cable & Wireless Communications. Previously, he was vice president of product development and innovation at ADT, Inc. In honor of his daughter, Alaina, who was killed in 2017 at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, he has worked to improve school safety in Broward County and across the country. In 2018, he was appointed to the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Public Safety Commission which was formed to analyze information from the school shooting and other mass violence incidents in the state and address recommendations and system improvements. Furthermore, he founded The WalkUp Foundation, a non-profit working to prevent the causes of violence in school through advocacy and intervention. He earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting and information systems from Brigham Young University. He is appointed to a four-year term.

 

This appointment is subject to confirmation by the Florida Senate.

Tallahassee, Fla. – Today, Governor Ron DeSantis released the following statement recognizing the one-year anniversary of the tragic events at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

 

On this solemn day, our state mourns the lives of the seventeen souls lost at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School one year ago. Since that tragic day, the Parkland community has demonstrated tremendous courage and resiliency, reminding us just how strong and united Floridians can be in the face of such devastating loss.

 

“We will never forget the heroes who risked and sacrificed their lives to protect others, nor the actions taken that day by first responders. Casey and I continue to keep the families and loved ones of the innocents who were lost in our prayers as we honor their memory today in a moment of silence.”
