Florida Senator Shevrin Jones on NAACP Travel Advisory

From the press office of Florida Senate Democrats:

MIAMI GARDENS — Today,Florida Senator Shevrin Jones (D-Miami Gardens) released the following statement regarding theNAACP’s issuance of a Florida travel advisory:

In Ron DeSantis’ Florida, Black Americans are absolutely less safe, so it is no wonder that the NAACP has issued this travel advisory, noting the state’s open hostility. Everyone ought to be able to visit and exist in our state, but that is no longer the case thanks to the attacks against Black and Brown communities from the governor and the legislature he controls.

It’s deeply distressing that DeSantis cares more about his campaign for president than he does delivering for people and actually doing the job he was elected to do. His dangerous agenda not only hurts people in our communities, but also harms our state’s economy, tourism, and local small businesses. When we have major employers pulling events and development out of the state in response to DeSantis’ embrace of right-wing authoritarianism, that hurts all of us.

Sure there are Stephanie…this makes the third civil rights-related organization to issue a travel warning advisory regarding anyone contemplating visiting the backwards state. But I suppose if one’s idea of a vacation is to step into the Twilight Zone of 1950s Florida just for kicks, well, sure, just come on down!

Tell that to the 131+ million people who visit here every year, and the more than 330,000 people who move here every year, with the biggest growth being Hispanics. I mean, seriously, what are they thinking?

I can’t imagine why they aren’t flocking to, say, California, where they can be taxed to death for the privilege of waking up to homeless camps and used needles on their front yards, and where toothpaste is behind lock and key at the last remaining neighborhood Walgreens that hasn’t gone out of business because breaking the law is no longer a crime, and where rolling blackouts due to an unreliable power grid are a normal part of modern progressive life.

But, hey, you’re right. Peace, prosperity, and personal safety are just so damn overrated.

I’m pretty sure “convenience” has little to nothing to do with it Stephanie…but, I’m suspect if you had a child that was transgender you might understand (have compassion for) that too.

Hmmm, Tom….guess others might disagree on the timeline you’re alluding to (see, e.g., https://www.npr.org/2023/05/02/1173499894/dwyane-wade-florida-desantis-trans-met-gala-anti-lbgtq-legislation)…either way, he’s been very vocal as of late about DeSantis’ latest purely politically motivated play when it comes to the transgender community because, hey, when you can’t actually do anything truly constructive for the vast majority of Floridians on real issues like homeowners insurance and affordable housing you jump on the latest GOP sound bite .

Timeline? So he moved in 2019 after he retired and before it became fashionable to bash Florida. Suddenly, in 2023, Wade changes his story and jumps on the pro-trans bandwagon after his own daughter “comes out.” How convenient.

Please don’t assume I have no compassion. If my child were transgender (or had any other medical condition) I’d do whatever I could to help him or her. But I certainly don’t want anyone else making medical decisions for my child without my knowledge or consent. That’s just common sense.

And it certainly is convenient that now he’s using his trans daughter as an excuse to claim why he moved, but when he actually moved, that wasn’t even mentioned.
